G.I. full form - Geographical Indication (GI) .
1.What is Geographical Indication ?
- A geographical indication (GI tag) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographic origin and they possess qualities / reputation that are due to that origin .
2.Why is it given ?
- It is an initiative of Government of India in which our government is trying to brand a commodity based on their origin.
3.What is its profit ?
- Basically its a branding of products in global level. It will directly help to the manufacturers and it will remove mediator.
- From a consumers point of view , we will get what we will pay.We will get a branded thing for which we will pay , we won't get fooled now .
- It also helps in rural development of a particular place.
- It will be helpful for earning to small workers .
4.When it started ?
- India as a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) , enacted the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration & Protection ) Act,1999 has come into force with effect from 15th September 2003.
- Darjeeling tea was 1st product to get GI tag in 2004.
5.Why it was in news ?
- Today (02/05/2020) Kashmir saffron got GI tag .
- Manipur Black rice Chak Hao got GI tag on (01/05/2020).
- Gorakhpur terracotta got GI tag on (01/05/2020).
